All of our Nurses and Midwives are registered and many are graduates who have also completed additional professional training programmes in their specialist area of practice. We work in partnership with Thames Valley University to provide a range of nursing qualifications up to degree level and support our nurses through these training programmes.
We also employ Nursing Assistants, all of whom must have an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification at Level 3 in Health & Social Care), or be willing to study for one within our in-house NVQ Assessment Centre, before they can work in our hospitals or clinics.
HCA training programme
HCA hospitals are committed to the concept that quality patient care derives from an educated and supported workforce. We promote the ‘Skills Escalator’ as a mechanism by which staff can enter the service from any route or training qualification and develop skills, moving from novice to expert clinical practitioner.
This strategy is characterised by two important features. Firstly, it looks to local labour markets as a key source of workforce supply. Secondly, it uses the skills and talent of the existing unregistered – or not formally qualified – workforce more effectively. By offering improved development opportunities and more interesting and varied roles, HCA has become an employer of choice in London for clinical staff and provides outstanding care for patients.
Clinical education initiatives include:
- Establishment of the HCA Clinical Education Centre offering a wide range of Continuing Professional Development Opportunities
- In house NVQ Assessment Centre, accredited by City & Guilds & offering NVQ Level 3 in health + social care & an NVQ Level 4 in clinical assessment & development
- Sponsored pre-registration nurse training opportunities where Health Care Assistants train to be Registered Nurses
- Comprehensive prospectus of post graduate education opportunities offered in house
- Formal partnership with Thames Valley University with HCA tutorial staff awarded Associate Lecturer status
- An HCA nurse degree programme, in association with TVU, this tailored specifically for nurses & midwives working in our hospitals & is unique in the independent healthcare sector
The post-graduate education prospectus is closely linked to our quality improvement agenda and has been proven to improve clinical outcomes.
